Biography

Born in Molfetta in 2001, Giuseppe de Palma has been interested in painting and drawing since early childhood. He attended the Artistic High School in Bari, studying Architecture while simultaneously studying painting techniques with painters Filippo Cacace and Renato Nosek.

At the age of eighteen, he visited Florence for the first time and attended a painting workshop with Cesar Santos. He fell in love with the cultural vitality of the city, and only two years later decided to move permanently from Puglia.

Once settled in Florence, he studied at The Florence Academy of Art, where, under the guidance of professional painters such as Simona Dolci, Toby Neve, Ramiro Sanchez, Tom Richards, and Daniel Graves, he developed skills in painting from life and compositional rules. These experiences brought him closer to the narrative aspect of historical paintings, which had always fascinated him.

After completing the three-year program, he was selected for the Fourth-year prize as a graduate in residence, and as a Principal instructor the following year.

Over these years, he has participated in numerous national and international exhibitions and competitions. One of the most recent is his qualification as a finalist—one of only fourteen professional painters selected worldwide—in the competition held by St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome to create a “Via Crucis” for the Basilica itself.

Several of his paintings, from Portraits to Scenes of various kinds, are now present in private and public collections in Oregon, New York, Ohio, Texas, Ireland, Greece, Malta, Rome, Florence, Perugia, Milan and different cities of Apulia.

Commissions

A commission is always a way to combine two minds—the artist's and the client's. It's never a cold or detached relationship, but rather a beautiful moment of intense creation.

Narrative in Painting

More about my art

I see the social purpose of painting as one of the most important aspects of my work. Every mark and brushstroke are simply words of a language that I use to communicate with the world around me. As in every form of communication, stories and metaphors represent the most lyrical way to express any concept. That is why I avoid using painting in a journalistic manner and always strive to find or create symbols that align with what I believe needs to be conveyed. Figurative art, for me, is the perfect tool to construct the grammar of this language—a shared vocabulary of shapes, colors, and meanings that evolves alongside our sensibilities.

My goal is indeed to capture on paper or canvas my active yet reflective responses to various themes affecting our society, exploring philosophies and resisting the increasing passivity of our lives.
